![]() ![]() The surface color is gray, more or less light, depending on the habitat in which it lives. It is a very elastic and compact sponge and for this reason it has been used commercially. In fact, in this video made between 72 and 75 meters deep you can see an elephant ear sponge over 1 meter in diameter. ![]() The experience of the dives made and the observations make me think that larger specimens can be found at greater depths. It is an endemic species of the Mediterranean Sea that generally lives at depths between 15 and 50 meters, but we can find it up to 150 meters deep. The measure ranges from 14 to 80 cm in diameter with a thickness ranging from 1 to 4 cm approximately. In the lower part it narrows, to form the point of attachment to the rock. The Elephant Ear Sponge, ( Spongia agaricina, Spongia lamella), resembles a relatively flat bowl. ![]()
